After I attended for a few hours (9/4/2005) the Civil War fest at Lake Villa, Illinois, (9/4/2005), having spoken to some reenactors of the Confederate 2nd Kentucky Cavalry on my certainty of a Woodson in the actual regiment, I searched the National Park Service's database and found Mr. Joseph M. Woodson appears in the ranks of Company "D", 2nd Regiment, Kentucky Cavalry (Woodward's). 2nd (Woodward's) Cavalry Regiment was organized in December, 1862, using Woodward's Kentucky Cavalry Battalion as its nucleus. The unit served in F.C. Armstrong's, J.W. Grigsby's, and J.S. Williams', and J.H. Lewis' Brigade, Army of Tennessee. It was involved in many conflicts in Tennessee, Alabama, and Kentucky, then took an active part in the Atlanta Campaign. The regiment went on to aid in the defense of Savannah and the campaign of the Carolinas. On April 26, 1865, it surrendered. Its commanders were Colonel Thomas G. Woodward and Major Thomas W. Lewis. "There were two 2d KY Cavalry units, Morgan's/Duke's and Woodward's, and both were known as the 2d during the war. When the Kentucky Adjutant General's Report was published about 1915, they did not know what to do with the two units that were numbered "2d". Since Morgan and Duke were so well known, they listed their unit as the 2d and erroneously stuck Woodward's unit in as the "15th KY Cavalry". Woodward's unit was never known as the 15th.
