SHELF LIFE: Thanks giving

Where would we be without our patrons? Nearly 700 of you come and visit us every day. We notice if you don’t come in at your regular time and wonder if you’re ok. Many of you share your lives with us, and we rejoice with you and grieve with you. Some of you bring us cookies, and we are truly thankful for the treats. We hope that you continue to visit us and share your love of books and your news with us. We are thankful for two groups who help this library system by serving as advocates and volunteers and by raising money to help us provide programs and services: the library’s foundation and the Friends of the Library. Your assistance is invaluable.

You help us provide the adult summer reading program, a lecture series, help pay for new technologies, continuing education, and so many other things. The library’s foundation has undertaken a new role recently – our capital campaign. Raising $500,000 when you’ve never tried to raise money before is a daunting task. But the generosity and support our community has for the library has filled our hearts. We’ve raised more than $360,000 and we thank all our donors. Whether you gave us $5 or $50,000, you’ve helped support our dream to continue to provide excellent library services to everyone in the county. I’d love to list every one of your names, but there just isn’t room. So here are the top 10, Alpha Natural Resources, Dominion, Charles Byrd, Sue Clark, Friends of the Library, Eleanor Hall Hutton and Jack Hall, Tom and Donna Fowlkes, Marvin and Marcia Gilliam, the Glade Spring Library Committee and John and Ruth Sheffield. All I can say is thank you from depth of my reader’s soul. Join us for A Christmas Cabaret, a fundraising musical event, at the Abingdon Senior Center, Sunday, Dec. 4. Susie Buckner and Suzanne Cox will be performing at 2:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.
