HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- You might think that a veteran-owned business enjoys a special status in a city like Huntsville, home to Redstone Arsenal, thousands of retired military and well-known for its patriotism and support for troops. That doesn't mean there isn't any tangible benefit to being veteran-owned. Like "minority-owned," "woman-owned" and other categories, he said it's a box that can be checked off that might make a business more attractive to a major company seeking team members for a big federal contract. The government tries to "set aside" or direct about three percent of some contract dollars to veteran-owned businesses.
