'Veteran-owned business' label is good, but CEOs say ability, competitiveness ...

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- You might think that a veteran-owned business enjoys a special status in a city like Huntsville, home to Redstone Arsenal, thousands of retired military and well-known for its patriotism and support for troops. And you'd be right.

"All else being equal, a veteran-owned business - or especially a service-disabled veteran-owned business - carries some special intangible weight in terms of recognition and appreciation," said Joe Fitzgerald, founder and president of the aerospace and defense consulting firm, Decision Sciences Co. He's also state president of the Association of the U.S. Army and a founder of Honor Flight in North Alabama.

"In this community I think that prime contractors especially, when they're looking for teaming partners, look favorably upon those patriotic among us," he said. "It's like an added reference on a résumé when you're seeking a job."

But that's about it. Fitzgerald quickly cautioned that contracts and business are won because a company is capable and on par with the competition, not because of a "veteran-owned" label.

"It increases your opportunity, a bit," said Larry Anderson, founder of service-disabled veteran-owned Alatec . "It doesn't give you work. ... Nothing is a substitute for preparation and ability."

That doesn't mean there isn't any tangible benefit to being veteran-owned. Like "minority-owned," "woman-owned" and other categories, he said it's a box that can be checked off that might make a business more attractive to a major company seeking team members for a big federal contract. The government tries to "set aside" or direct about three percent of some contract dollars to veteran-owned businesses.

"It's like icing on the cake," said Stephanie Sellers, program director of the Veterans Business Assistance Center, formed by the Women's Business Center of North Alabama . "It sure does make things taste better. ...

"If you can do the work, that's your first foot in the door. It's all about your capability and core competency," she said. "Then you say, 'OK, by the way, I'm a service-disabled veteran' or whatever.
